Its 2026, the apocalypse has been in affect for several months, chaos and disorder are the rulers of this new world. The zombies are the least of your worries, other humans are more ruthless and unpredictable. At least with zombies you know what they want. The dead are walking and you have to survive

The footfalls of twenty-two year old Ana echoed on the pavement as she made her way hurriedly down the street. Her bleach blonde hair was pulled back in a bun at the crown of her head, curly strands hanging out and framing her face, and draped over her shoulders was a filthy green backpack. One of her hands was clenched tightly into a fist, wrapped around the hilt of an eight inch hunting knife, and the blade protruded from flesh with a forlorn air. Though she wielded the weapon inexpertly and it was clear that she had little expertise with the knife of any kind, Ana exuded an air of confidence that she knew she only possessed when the blade was in her hand.
Rounding a bend in the street, Ana came face to face with a cluster of shops. She let out a sigh of relief before casting a glance over her shoulder and shoving the knife into one of the side pockets of her backpack. Her hasty steps suddenly became as quiet as Ana could make them - which wasn't much, considering she was walking across a bed of crunching, broken glass that looked as if it had shattered in the street - as she submerged herself into one of the narrow alleyways off the side of the shops. Alertness and nervousness seemed to be pouring from every pore in her body, making Ana hyperaware of every little noise and movement that occurred around her.
Ana felt slightly more relieved as she stood in the cloak of shadows cast by the two shops making up the alleyway. Her eyes scanned the buildings parallel to her as she slowly came to her senses, and she held by a snarl of anguish as she realized that, even from this distance, they had been looted clean. Damn scavengers. Who cares that it was the fucking human extinction event - couldn't people be a little more generous?
Groaning, Ana slumped back against the wall behind her and sunk to her knees, discarding her backpack at her side. She had been on the move for days, having entered rural Georgia somewhere a few days past. She didn't know where she was going or what her purpose was, but Ana had never stopped. Ever since the beginning of the apocolaypse so many months ago, Ana had kept on her own. Though she was far from well off - armed with only an old buck knife that she knew little more than to plunge walker's in the head with, one change of clothes, meager rations and a sleeping bag - Ana had been able to support herself fairly well; that is, until her food supply ran out.
Even now Ana could feel her stomach twisting into knots of protesting hunger. She hadn't eaten in over two days, and she was growing desperate. Lately, she'd taken to looting abandoned towns and villages, but came up virtually empty-handed every time. Either they were picked clean or infested by the walking dead; either way, Ana had always gotten the short end of the stick. She was beginning to feel the effects of fatigue and weakness that came before starvation, and it didn't help that the chilly Autumn months were already moving in. Though winters were mild down in the deep south, it was little reassurance against all else.
Letting out another groan, Ana blew a strand of curly hair away from her face and tilted her head back against the brick wall behind her, waiting. What for, she didn't know.

sounds came from up the street, a young dog who looked a bit like a mixed bred mutt with some german shepard in him came galloping up. He stopped as he saw the girl his long fur raising a little however he seemed to recognize that she wasnt a threat, instead of barking he turned and galloped off once more leaving silence again

Martin was skinning a buck that he had managed to kill with his bow and arrow when Benedict came up and pawed at his coat. Martin had long since trained the dog to always keep quiet, it had been hard at first but the dog had quickly learnt. He huffed stuffing away his skinning knife "what is it boy?" his voice was low and calm, he packed the meat into his foraging bag and narrowed his eyes at the left over of the carcass, he couldn't just leave it there it would attract walkers, although he lived up in the trees the man could hardly take chances. so he whistled softly a quiet order for the dog to begin digging, glancing at the dog he had remembered that he had apparently found something. He decided to go and check it out while his faithful companion dug a hole, Benedict probbaly would snack on the offal of the buck but he couldn't blame him, they both had to store up on muscle and food for the coming winter months. He made his way toward the deserted town, silent and steady his face was a determined mask and his slightly long beard tickled his skin a little.

He eyed the broken glass around the shops and skirted it quietly, his eyes scouting around for any sign of what the dog could have found so interesting. And there it was, a human, well one who wasnt dead yet, she looked skinny and dead on her feet. Bleach blonde hair catching his attention from ages away, he knocked an arrow and walked quietly up, his face hardened. Women, you could never trust them, he knew that much from years ago. His chest tightened with anger as he remembered walking in on the cheating couple, he had beaten up his friend that day, he spat on the pavement disgusted at the memory and crept forward. He stopped a few feet away from her his eyes narrowed untrustingly, although she couldn't be that much of a threat, the knife in her hand was not meant for throwing which meant if she tried it would quickly sink down. He scuffed a shoe along the asphalt as a way of announcing his presence to her, an ear listening for the shuffling sound of walkers or the familiar click of Benedicts claws on the hard ground. His dirty blonde hair hung in his face a little giving him a kind of dangerous look but quite honestly he didn't give two craps about what anyone thought. The entire world had gone to shit but he hadn't quit on life.

The longer Ana lay staring up at the sliver of blue sky set against the top of the buildings making up the alleyway, the more exhausted she became. She felt as if her limbs were being weighed down with blocks of lead, constricting her movement and keeping her grounded. She wondered if she would be able to muster up the energy to move if a herd of walkers came through, and then found herself wondering if walker meat was edible. The thought of eating the repulsive, stinking creatures that preyed on her flesh was repugnant, and Ana found herself quickly tightened her grip on the knife in her listless hand in order to banish such thoughts.
As she once again began to sink down in a state of unawareness, Ana suddenly found herself straightened, fingers reflexively tightening around the hilt of her weapon. Her gaze swept across the street outside of the alleyway and she recoiled into the shadows, hooking her elbow around her backpack; before she could move far, however, Ana was cast in darkness and she realized with a jolt of trepidation that someone was standing over her. She couldn't immediately tell if it was human or walker, but as they didn't immediately make a lunge for her, Ana assumed the latter. Still, she wasn't an idiot - over the past few months, Ana had quickly come to realize that in this harsh new world, humans could be as unforgiving as their undead predators.
For a moment, there was silence as Ana stared up at the unfamiliar person. As her initial surprise faded, she realized that it was a male, probably a few years older than her. He looked raggedy and worn, but was alive nontheless. Under any other circumstances, Ana would have immediately turned on her heel and fled, or demanded the man get out of her way; now, however, Ana's stomach practically roared in protest as she opened her mouth to speak. Wincing, the twenty-two year old scrambled to her feet, ignoring the dizzying sensation that was brought with sudden movement. Her knuckles were bone white around the hilt of her knife, but she met the man's gaze with defiance burning in her blue eyes. On the brink of starvation or no, Ana wasn't going to cower.
"Who're you?" She asked fearlessly, though her voice wavered halfway through. In caution, weakness or hunger, Ana wasn't sure.

The man watched impassivley as the girl scrambled to her feet, as she did he assessed her situation. The way she was sitting indicated that she was starving and the thinness of her face confirmed that. He let a slight smirk make its way up his face "Im Martin" was all he said, he turned his head around glancing over his shoulder as he heard footsteps, thankfully it was not a walker but Benedict, he trotted up his plumed tail wagging ferociously. He nosed the girls hand making Martin smirk a little more "i do believe that hes in love" he narrowed his blue eyes once more and said carefully "and you are?" he shifted his weight to better spread his balance. he kept one blue eye on the sky as he watched the burning yellow sun lowering in the distance, just perfect he should be getting back to the safe spot but instead he was talking to a white haired chick. Women folk he thought annoyedly to himself. He really should just turn and leave her to rot, they were nobbut trouble and he disliked them. Not that walkers nor other men were any different, human beings were dicks and that was that. He relaxed his arms a little before placing his arrow back in its quiver and gripping his bow, he had stolen the bow from a sports store when the world had first begun to turn to crap.

He waited slightly impatiently for the girl to spit out her name he said to benny "Benedict home" the dog flicked his ears in affirmation of the command and turned trotting off. The dog was generally very happy not much put a downer on his happy spirits. The dogs personality was a definite clash with the sarcastic grumpy redneck who stood before the bleach blonde. He stood there the bow grasped in one hand and the other just hanging there, the buck pelt covering his back pack. His hand rose up and he ran his fingers down the long stubble on his cheeks.

Ana wasn't deaf to the note of cynical coldness that laced the mans voice, and it was that little spark of hostility that made her clutch her knife all the more tightly. Though Ana wasn't very efficient with the blade and she knew that the man before probably had much more prowess with whatever weapons he had on his person - the visible bow and quiver being one of them - it made her feel much more secure that she at least had something in her hand. As he introduced himself as Martin, the twenty two narrowed her eyes and wondered how he'd survived for so many months by himself. At least, she assumed he was alone; the thought that he may be traveling with a band of survivors sent a thrill of forboding racing down Ana's spine.
Just as she was opening her mouth to speak, Ana was interrupted by something nudging against her hand. Surpressing a shriek of surprise, Ana started and looked down to find a dog pressing against her with a kind, whiskery face. Mouth opened slightly in surprise, Ana hesitantly patted the canine on its scruffy head, realizing that it must belong to the man before her. A flush creeping up her neck at how easily she'd been alarmed, Ana turned back to Martin, her face twisting into a scowl as she noticed his smirk. I do believe hes in love. Asshole.
As the dog, Benedict, turned on its paws and began to trot home, Ana feverently wondered just where home was. She had to be bullshitting herself if she was going to let this man let her think he lived off in the middle of the woods during the zombie apocalypse...but everything he said and did pointed to just that theory. What an idiot. Running a hand through her hair in agitation, Ana looked at Martin. "Its Ana," She finally snapped. "You gonna get out my way, now?"

"I'm just deciding what to do with you" his blue eyes narrowed and he finally sighed, pulling the buck skin off his backpack he held it out to her and said "here i have enough pelts at home and you look cold. It will keep you warm" he personally was surprised at his kindness toward the girl in front of him. His fingers stroked his stubbly cheeks smirking as she shot him a glare as she stroked Benny. The almost six foot tall man couldn't help but let another smirk show as he realized how tightly she was gripping her flimsy knife. He didn't live in the middle of the woods he lived up in the trees, much safer than living on the ground. He folded his arms and narrowed his eyes in thought as he glowered at the girl in front of him. Now since she was also alone he couldn't just leave her out here to become walker food, but women were like snakes, cold hearted and full of venom.

The sound of bottles breaking made him stiffen, he glanced over his shoulder then gritted his teeth, just fucking perfect. Now there were walkers out before dark and he had to get home and then there was this snake to deal with. If she had been with a group he would have cast them all out packs of snakes or others survivors were more trouble than they were worth. Though this one was skinny and reminded him of Benedict when he had found the dog, as much as he disliked to admit it he did have a tendency to collect strays, and Benedict trusted her. The mixed breed German Shepard did have a good judge of character and people, and the walkers wouldn't get much food off her anyway. Drawing his fingers over his lips he made his decision and said in an annoyed tone "come on then Ana, walkers are approaching" He turned and walked down an alleyway pulling down a ladder "hurry up, you can't fight walkers in your condition girl" he gestured for her to climb up the ladder and tightened the bow once more an arrow knocked and ready to be let loose

Ana's scowl only deepened at Martin's smart remark. Though she put on a coldly indifferent facade, Ana would have been lying to herself if she said that she didn't feel the slightest flickers of uneasiness igniting inside her. Not only was she weakened with hunger, but the man before her had obviously prowess with the weapons on his person. The idea of her overpowering him or coming up on the winning side in a fight was laughable; Ana saw no way of getting out of her situation less she cooperated, and even then leaving without food would be a near death sentence. Profanities swirled around the young woman's head and she was forced to admit that she was actually going to have to collaborate with this asshole.
As Martin twisted one arm around and withdrew something from the depths of his backpack, Ana instantly stiffened, but she relaxed slightly as she realized it was just what looked like an old animal pelt. Her eyes narrowed as Martin offered it to her. Though the thick, coarse texture of it looked like heaven to the trembles of intermingled cold and hunger that wracked her body, Ana was no way in hell going to let on how desperate her situation was. "I'm fine," She snapped, staring pointedly at the offered pelt and trying to stifle the minuscule spark of guilt at so rudely denying the somewhat generous offer. Her fingers instinctively curled into the thin material of her long sleeved shirt and Ana was surprised to find her voice softening an octave as she added, "Just fine."
For a moment, silence fell between the pair of them - then, the sound of shattering glass reached Ana's ears. Every muscle going rigid with tension and treapidation, the young woman's eyes widened slightly as she recognized the tell-tale sound of growling, shuffling, approaching walkers. A curse slipping past her lips, Ana barely registered Martin jerking down the ladder of the nearby alley wall. Like hell she was going somewhere with this strange man - but then again, what choice did she have? Letting out an internal groan and all the more aware of the rapidly nearing predators, Ana angrily stuffed the blade of her knife through one of the sidepockets of her backpack and gripped the ladder with both hands, not even shooting Martin a glance as she began to pull her way upwards towards the roof of the building she was ascending.

He climbed up after her, easily hauling the ladder up onto the roof, he grinned slightly "looks like we will be spending more time together after all" he dumped the pelt in the girls arms and then walked off, jumping from one roof to another that was down a bit he whispered "come on, i have a relatively safe place to wait them out" He looked around and sighed with relief the walkers hadn't noticed them yet so he glared up at the girl his thick hair messy. He hoped that Benedict had used his superior jumping skills and gotten his furry behind into their nest that was up in a tall tree.
He turned deciding that it was up to her if she wanted to follow or not and continued on, leaping to the ground with a muffled thump he lightly jogged into the forest, nearing the old huge tree that had a makeshift tree house up in its higher branches he sighed with relief.
He gripped the bark with his hands and parkour style began climbing the tree, he slipped once or twice but not seriously and soon was sitting at the 'door' that was more of an opening waiting for the girl
