First topic message reminder :

Tori's tired of his old pet Ellie, and sold her to the princess for further training after she crossed the line with Tia. Luckily, there is a faerie who is quite interested in a bedwarmer from Kat. Hopefully once Kat is done retraining her, he'll be happy to take her on as his pet in the more crowded city-like part of the fae world.

He'd left her alone for the morning, wanting her to settle again and realise that he wasn’t going to hurt her for anything. Barely glancing up at the call for lunch, he frowned at his work, trying to work out why they were missing so much. He was definitely going to be bringing that up at the meeting that was coming up. Eventually surfacing to eat the sandwich, he returned to his work after, determined to find and close the loophole that he was fairly certain was being exploited by someone. Feeling the girl sit at his feet and then cling to him, he absently dropped his free hand to brush his fingers through her hair gently. The quiet voice made him pause and he glanced down at her. The words confirming what he’d suspected, and also confirmed that the princess had quite broken her in properly. It was rare after all for a well trained pet to know how they’d been trained. But he liked the smartness of this one, and hopefully she would keep that quick mind to perhaps eventually help him more than just her current chores. Deciding that the best course of action would be to be mostly honest with her, he returned to his work as he spoke, resuming brushing his fingers through her hair. “Partly,” he said simply. “Mostly to help you recover from what the princess did. I don’t entirely approve of her methods.”

closing her eyes when his free hand touched her and brushed through her hair gently, the gentleness of the touch something she craved. Starting to relax as the movement continued proving not to be just a one off, ivy listened as he spoke explaining that it was mostly to help her recover from what her previous master had done to her and that he didn't exactly agree with katherines methods. Unsure how much she should believe that, Ivy just nodded deciding that she'd find out in time if he was speaking true or not, still she couldn't help but wish she had no idea, that she was naive again. It'd been a hard lesson, several of them infact, it seemed she was slow to learn but she'd learned all the same, resting her chin on his leg she sighed quietly listening to the sounds that seemed awfully loud in the quiet room. He was so warm and real, the weaker side of her that craved this relished in the moment, it was enough to let her enjoy some moments of peace, green eyes opened briefly to glance up at him to study a moment or two before they closed again. This all seemed to good to be true, he'd said he wouldn't get sick of her, he wouldn't hurt her and now he claimed that he wanted to help her heal. This didn't make any sense, from what she'd learned this wasn't how faeries were, it was probably lies to make her relax, to behave and be a good obedient little pet, wishing that the cynical untrustingness would just leave her alone so she could feel safe for just these precious moments her jaw tensed up. however ivy was careful to not let her body tense up again, it was better to not distract them from their job lest they get annoyed. He'd never gotten annoyed so far but there was a first time for everything, a quiet noise from the dark faerie thankfully distracted her from the two completely different povs from her head, the one that said it was better to behave and have nice things and the other stubborn side that demanded the opposite. Releasing his leg and moving to stand on her knees and peer over the edge of the desk, a surprised look took over the girls face, eyes flicking over the various numbers "I know this.... this is like a business, too many for one, multiple businesses! A log of them and their profits" her father had taught her how to keep the books and recordings for his business so despite there being more than one business it was easy enough to figure out what was going on. Interested now she leaned against the desk a little interpreting the information and quietly frowning when a few things weren't consistent like the others, however by now Ivy realized that she may have overstepped. Looking back at him and shrinking down from the desk warily, it was clear that despite the few months it'd been and how she'd been treated the night before she still expected things to slide and go bad, yet she didn't apologize, despite the trained pet part of her said she should.

Not pleased with what the reports where telling him, he had a fair few spread out to compare, well aware that someone was not being honest with him. Flicking a glance at the girl when she showed interest, he didn’t discourage her, letting her study the numbers and give her opinion. “Yes. Someone is lying to me.” Sifting through the papers again, he produced old reports that were much more consistent and compared them, humming thoughtfully to himself. He was beginning to work out what was going on, and he was displeased to say the least. “What do you see wrong?” It would be interesting to see what she thought, he knew that the princess had said she was trained in business bookkeeping, but it was the first time the girl had actually shown interest in what he did. It was a good sign, and meant that his decision to take her to the meeting in a couple of days was a good one. She’d be able to listen and give her opinion later on all the happenings.

returning her gaze to the numbers when he asked what she saw "The older numbers are a lot more consistent, middle to high range, the new ones just don't fit. its like they've tried to make them fit the old numbers but they're not very good at it, see how the new number for january is an eleven different didgit difference compared to the old numbers from last year. they can't have made a massive jump like that in just a year" continuing to study them before adding "they're a pattern, one months higher the next is lower, in the old records the winter months weren't very good, on the new ones the first and second month of winter are rather high, I wonder if they're mixing false results with real results to try and get around rules and probably taxes" it felt good to do something like this again, numbers made sense in a way that faeries didn't, they were constant and there was always a logical explanation for them. In an uncertain world they were certain, however it could be she was so out of practice she was completely wrong so ivy flicked Niko a look wondering if she'd gotten it right. Lowering herself to sit again she kept her gaze on his face for a few more moments then looked down, finding the pen that was always kept with her and fiddling with it, it helped even though the princess had hated it.

Listening to her, the dark faerie was pleased with what she was saying, and nodded approvingly. “Good.” He pulled another set of papers towards her, wanting to see what she could draw from this now. “Both these traders trade in wool, these are this year’s figures so far. The inconsistent one is a fairly new trader, he took over late last year.” It always amused him slightly how the new traders thought they could try to fool him. It wasn’t for nothing that he was trade master, and he made sure that everything kept going the way it should. “The meeting you are joining me at will be discussing this. I want you to listen carefully to it all.” The other more established trader had steady reports that Niko was more used to seeing, and he knew that particular faerie quite well, liking him. Not particularly bothered by her fiddling with the pen – after all it made little impact on him – he continued to look over the reports to try and work out exactly how much discrepancy was being reported to him.

The approving nod made green eyes sparkle and a smile appear, eagerly taking the bits of paper and looking them over ivy frowned a little comparing the two sets of numbers and mulling over them. Silent and almost stern, the girl read the numbers again and again formulating theories and holding them mentally against the other numbers that she'd seen before finally after a long silence, green eyes blinked and looked up at him almost as if she'd come out of a trance "He's not stupid he's clever, he's blended truth and lies into one, some of the high numbers are the truth and some of the low numbers are the truth, this high one is the complete set of money he's bringing in including his under the table scheme, this low one is what he's making if we took the side money out" her features lit up with almost admiration for the faerie who'd been cunning enough to try and hide his extra money like that, mixing truth with lies was something she'd learnt to expect from faeries but for one to do it to another faerie to such an extent was almost enjoyable. of course she could be completely wrong but she'd lived with faeries for a long time, and had a general idea of how quirky, cunning and intelligent they were, while there were more simpler solutions she had an inkling that whomever this was hadn't made so many 'mistakes' by mistake. Still one thing annoyed her, why put false numbers down and real numbers down, wouldn't it make more sense to look at the numbers from the year before and make them similar to that? What game was being played here? The exhilarated look faded, it was quite clear that being able to actually use her brain instead of doing chores helped briefly distract her from the demons in her head, sitting down on the floor again she puzzled over it before looking up at him "I just don't understand why? The smartest thing would be to copy numbers close to the previous years take instead of doing this scheme, is something else going on?" hoping she wouldn't get in trouble for bringing it up, ivy absently scratched the itching healing skin through her jeans and resettled herself so she was sitting on her legs.

It pleased him that she had a head for numbers and could understand what his work was without him going through the tedious business of explaining it. Perhaps eventually she’d be able to help properly, but he wasn’t going to count on that. He was managing his workload at the moment, and that was enough for him right now. Giving a slight nod at her response, he studied the pages and numbers more closely, trying to figure out what was being hidden, why, and how. “Why is what we need to figure out. The meeting on Wednesday is part of it, which is why I want you behaving and listening.” It didn’t escape him that she seemed to be unsure of her answer, and he brushed his fingers over her head gently. “You did well, my dear. Thank you.” Getting back to his work after that, he left her alone with his free hand resting tangled in her hair gently, offering her the touch that she always seemed to be craving.

What he said made plenty of sense, nodding whilst Niko spoke Ivy couldn't help the slightly haughty sniff, she wasn't stupid enough to misbehave infront of others she just needed expectations laid out plainly. However Ivy settled again when he brushed his fingers over her head, leaning against his leg again very content with the praise and the fingers tangled in her thick hair. "What will you expect from me there?" She'd been trained for court but not for the type of meeting he was mentioning, unsure if she'd be expected to sit at his feet or stand, despite knowing what he was manipulating her for, she was starting to want to try for him considering how she'd been treated here although she still couldn't stand being made to do what she saw as grotty housewife work. The touch did wonders, though, the wolves howling and growling in her head backed off and let her be, doing her best to silence the bitter bold part of herself that told her this was just what he wanted, Ivy nuzzled into his leg a little unable to help herself. It was nice being able to partly tell herself that this was normal, that she didn't have the mental troubles she did, that this was healthy and she was loved. Gritting her teeth quietly begging for the 'woke' bitter side of her that mocked her for wanting that to shut up and leave her in peace Ellies arms slipped around the leg again, not letting herself show anything else. It wasn't a good idea to let the faerie know she knew, even if it had slipped out earlier.
